What are phrasal verbs in English?

What are Phrasal verbs? A Phrasal verb is a phrase that contains of a verb with a preposition or adverb or both, the meaning of which is different from the meaning of its individual words.

This is a combination of a verb and an adverb or a verb and a preposition, or both, in which the combination has a meaning different from the meaning of the words considered individually.

 


Sleep in 

Sleep longer than wanted

We usually sleep in on Saturday.

She doesn't even like sleeping in, even on Saturdays.

 

Drop off

Fall asleep easily

She kept dropping off at her desk sometimes during the office.

You can get best price if you shop around on the internet.

 

Cheer up

Usually, this phrase is used as a phrase of encouragement said to someone who seems sad (just we can say “cheer up!” to them for them to encourage), sometimes this can mean to try to make someone happier.

Brian was having a bad day, so his girlfriend cheered him up by taking him out for a cup of tea.

   

Bring on

This phrase is used when something negative. Basically, to cause something to happen

His liver failure was brought on by years of drinking.

 

TAKE UP

This phrase use usually uses a certain amount of space or time

The refrigerator takes up most of the kitchen!

This work will take up the whole month.

My wife takes up most of my time.

 

LOOK DOWN

This is very simple as to move your eyes down

He was very shy and he looked down when he met his girlfriend

Come up

We usually use this phrase, when something happens unexpectedly. And also, to bring up a topic.

I wanted to tell him that I got a new branded car but the chance never came up.

I was going to meet my girlfriend for dinner, but something came up so I had to cancel it. (so that happened unexpectedly)

GO BACK

This also used to return to a place

She finished his office work and went back to his house.

We usually use this phrase for many ways. However, the basic intention to use this is “to interrupt or stop something.”

When you are driving, to get in front of another car suddenly

We normally use this phrase to produce an idea/ new idea or solution

This we use to get information or facts

Can you please find out what time the library closes?

I found out that we need to submit the project proposal by next Monday.

I don't know what the price of vehicle, but I'll find out.

 

PULL OUT

We can use this phrase to take something out of a container

He pulled his purse out of his bag.

She reached into the drawer and pulled out a Laptop and Tablet

He grabbed her shopping bag and pulled out a newly bought shirt.

 

TURN AROUND and/or TURN ROUND

This is use to move so you face the other direction

He turned around and looked out the balcony.

We walked along the park for a while, then turned around and walked back to home.

 

PUT UP

We normally use this to fix something where it will be seen

He put up lots of decoration in his new house.

Please put up this board

The workers put their shoes up on the rack.
